Chuckles...

So, Annie's 6 month shots were today... what a trooper she was. One poke, a drop of blood, a few tears and a 4 hour nap. That was her day. However, the reason for my chuckling: I grabbed Isla's records and compared the 2 at 6 months. My discoveries follow:

Isla: 15 lbs, 9 ozs. 26 inches, head circumference - 43.5 inches
Annie: 16 lbs, 2 ozs. 26 inches, head circumference - 41.5 inches

So, are you laughing yet? Annie is bigger in the weight department, their height is the exact same and a whole 2 inches difference in the size of their heads. HAHAHA... now you can laugh. Isla's head, albeit beautiful, has always been on the larger side. This proves it. And I think it's funny and cute.

So, there you have it!
Isla, 6 months.

Annie, 6 months (same jammies too!)

*I wonder how many of you would have been confused had I not put the names under the photo...

Eating Bird Food?

I am completely obsessed with this blog right now: www.eatingbirdfood.com.

I have tried several of her recipes and have loved every single one of them! I love reading her ingredients lists and getting inspired to create my own delicious meals. Now, most of you know that I am not a vegetarian or a vegan nor do I plan on becoming one, but this website has delicious, healthy meals that you could easily add meat to! I made the Whole Wheat Tortilla Pizzas and added ground turkey to the recipe! Soooo tasty. I also had the hummus + bbq sauce + tuna sandwich... golly, SO good. It really allows me to look at eating healthy differently. It doesn't mean boring or bland, it means tasty, energizing, rejuvenating! But, my favorites right now are any of her overnight oats recipes! OH MY GOSH! SOOOOO unbelievably easy, convenient and scrumptious! Take a browse!

Happy 6 Month Birthday Annie-Roo!

Wow! It's hard to believe that six months ago today, Annie was mere hours old. I know I say this all the time but time SERIOUSLY flies and I feel like having kids just perpetuates that. Another six months goes by, and we are celebrating a one year birthday! Yikes! I must soak up every last baby minute I get... it could be my last chance (I hope not... but I gotta wear down Cam).

Annie's 6 month shots are on the 29th, so I will post some stats then. But she seems to be around the 50th percentile for height, weight and head circumference. All in all, a proportional child (unlike Isla who was around the 40th percentile for h&w but the 95th for head). She is soooo beautiful (*biased, I know), and I feel my heart melt just a little more every time I look into her 'disney' eyes. She is a delightful baby (no teeth yet though... it could ALL change), who giggles and laughs and cuddles and chills. Annie and Isla already have a bond... equally admiring each other. I pray this continues to develop & strengthen as they get older. Here are her most recent pics!

The Same or Totally Different??

First off, I must give credit where credit is due. I am TOTALLY ripping off this entire blog post from my good friend who just so happened to do this last week with her girls. I even copied the title. But it was cute and fun and it made me want to do it too! Thanks friend for the inspiration!

I find it so fascinating to hear people's opinions on whether Isla and Annie look like or don't look alike or who they look like, Cam or me or none of us... and the list goes on. It's just funny. So I thought I would post a few pics of them at the same age and you can see for yourself.

 Isla enjoying some solids.

Annie TRYING to enjoy some solids.

Isla chillin'.

Annie relaxin' in the shade.

Mommy and Isla.

Mommy and Annie.

My conclusion: totally different. What do you think?

A Weekend of Dates

What can I say? This past weekend was a perfect one! It kinda started last Sunday when Cam told me he had planned a special date for us for Friday night. He said I could even wear a dress (that's when you know it's a real good one). So Friday came, and boy was I pumped! I got all gussied up and awaited the arrival of... JERSEY BOYS! If you have all been living under a rock for a while, it's a Broadway show traveling through Edmonton, playing at the Jubilee. Now, if you know me, you know I love musicals. Everything about them... the costumes, the staging, the acting, the whole experience and of course, THE MUSIC! And really, does it get any better than seeing "Sherry" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" (think of Heath Ledger singing it to Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You) sung live... granted it was NOT sung by the original Four Seasons but these 4 gents were quite the talented bunch. It was the story as the aforementioned group, Four Seasons, later known as Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The story chronicles four guys from New Jersey who started singing under lamp posts and how they got to selling 175 million records worldwide. IT WAS INCREDIBLE. There are no words really. The date started with a dinner at the Pourhouse on Whyte, followed by a sub par dessert at Block 1912 (we were disappointed) and then of course, the amazingly amazing show. The best part of the date was the fact that Cam planned THE WHOLE THING... he found the sitter, picked the show (knowing full well it was totally in my wheelhouse) and surprised me with the plan. It was absolutely wonderful doing something like with Cam... we've never gone to a show like that before. Needless to say, Cam thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Worth every penny for sure and I recommend ANYONE see it, even if you are unfamiliar with the music. The talent is outrageous. It's funny, dramatic, heart wrenching, interesting AND you can bust a move in your seat. Does it get any better than that? It was the perfect evening! I wanna go again...

Then on Saturday, after a wonderful family day at the Strathcona Market and Whyte Ave with our ladies (and a wiener roast), I thought "I'm gonna take Isla to Vi's for Pies". And so I did. I explained to her that it was Mommy's favorite place in the whole wide world and that she could pick out ANY dessert she wanted and that it was a special date, just for Isla and Mommy. She was soooo cute and I know that she was excited! So, I of course order my peanut butter mousse pie (it's been MIA the past few times I've been) and Isla picked Lemon Poppyseed Cake... my third favorite. We sat on the patio and just hung out. We sang our ABC's, we talked about Justin Bieber, we laughed, we took photos together. I surprised myself at how much fun it really was! She is such a little girl now, with a unique personality and it was like I was out with one of my girlfriends! So much fun... man, I love her so insanely much. We will DEFINITELY do it again!

Schellenberg's Go South

So... we were given a hefty amount of Airmiles from Cam's mom with the stipulation that they be used for something for the whole family! With a little research, we decided to book 2 nights hotel in Red Deer and 1 night in Drumhellar on the August long weekend.  We left Saturday morning and headed right to Aspen Beach at Gull Lake! This beach was beautiful and so kid friendly. They had a gigantic playground, a sandy beach, a little concession to buy ice cream and treats and the lake was perfect 'Isla' level. She had a blast... we all did actually! We headed into Red Deer after our sunny day, checked into our hotel and then headed out for a pizza dinner, complete with pizza dough mustaches! A perfect start to our get-a-way!

On Sunday, we decided to spend the day at Sylvan Lake. I hadn't been there in a super long time but I was totally impressed with the facelift that had been done! Huge, new public washrooms, a great big playground, lots of lawn chairs to relax in... it was great fun! Although there was no beach due to the insanely high water levels, Isla still had a riot! We took her in the water with her inflatable elephant and she loved the lake so much! We played at the playground and of course, had some ice cream at the Big Moo. What a fantastic way to spend a sunny day. Annie of course, sat in the shade; maxin' and relaxin' all day long! We realized that you don't have to go far to have a fantastic holiday and make memories!
We spent Sunday night in Red Deer as well. Isla loved sleeping in a hotel bed ALL to herself (see above photo). However, this did prove difficult when it was bed time and Isla wanted to stay up with us to watch the Olympics. Cam got innovative and built a barricade around her bed, blocking her precious view of the TV. After pretending her bunny was on the balance beam doing a routine, she drifted off to sleep. Such precious moments we shared.

Monday was a busy, crazy, long, super fun day! We packed the kids up and headed to Drumhellar. When we arrived, we went STRAIGHT to the Royal Tyrell Museum. I don't know who loved it more; Isla or Cam & I? She was beyond thrilled. Her little voice echoing through: "Look Mom, Look Dad, DINOSAURS"! She was ecstatic, to say the least. That museum is extremely impressive. We spent a couple hours there, touring each exhibit, reading about the various fossils and telling Isla all that we knew about dinosaurs. She was simply amazed. It is definitely something we will go to again, once the ladies are a little older. After this, we headed to our hotel, The Jurassic Inn (haha), and then went to the World's Tallest Dinosaur. We climbed the stairs, with both girls in tow and took a view of the town and surrounding landscape. It was so hot that day and coincidentally, there was a cute little spray park in front of the dinosaur so we splashed and played there before heading to Boston Pizza for the most gong show of a dinner we've ever had. After a 20 minute wait for our table, we sat down. I asked Isla if she had to go to the bathroom. "No". So I went. I come back to the table to see Isla's face wet with tears. Me: "Why is she crying?" Cam: "She was biting the table". Really Isla? Disgusting behavior. In the meantime, Annie had woken up from one of her token catnaps with a huge diaper full of poop. Me: "Isla, I am going to change Annie's diaper, do you have to go too?" Isla: "No". Upon returning to the table, Isla announces, "Mom, I gotta go pee". Third trip to the bathroom. I come back to the table to see that Annie has been crying and Cam was now feeding her a bottle that seemed to be spilling out of her face faster than the speed of sound. Once done, she barfed it all up. Finally, our food arrives. I blow on her food and tell Isla to wait a few minutes while it cools down. 2 seconds later, Isla is bawling saying her food is too hot. I nicely escort Isla out of the restaurant for a stern talking to about not biting tables, eating her food slowly, listening to mommy, sitting still and how to behave in restaurant. We ate as fast as we could and got the H- E- double hockey sticks outta there. Yikes. As amazing our day was, times like this happen quite frequently and at the time, it sucks. But by the end of the day, you just gotta laugh at the antics that can come. We love these times too!

On Tuesday, we decided to spend the morning/early afternoon in Drumhellar before returning home. We went to Reptile World... a place where they have over 80 species of reptiles, including HUGE pythons, anacondas, black mambas, turtles, crocodiles, lizards, frogs etc... Now, I thought Isla loved the museum but NOTHING like she loved these reptiles. She was yelling in awe at literally every creature in the exhibit. Over 80 times, we heard "LOOK MOM, LOOK DAD, a __________ (fill in with the name of a reptile she was looking at). It was like a kid at Christmas! She even held a snake... a boa constrictor to be exact and boy, was she pumped! She couldn't stop talking about it! We also went to the hoo doo's and the suspension bridge before heading back home. Even if Isla doesn't remember this trip, Cam and I will and the memories are worth every exhausting moment. I had so much fun... the best part was watching Isla and the uninhibited joy at her new discoveries. I am so proud of my little girl. Spending time as a family of 4 is just so special and I soaked in every moment. We have already started planning next years trip! Annie will be almost a year and half... she will be more of an active participant in our excursions! Hooray.

There you have it! A huge success... and now, I want more family time away!

Annie Eats

So, after noticing on our trip (blog post to come SOON) that Annie is putting everything she can get her paws on into her mouth, including attempting to grab our plates, forks, spoons and food, we decided it was time to start her on some solid food! Rice cereal was on the menu... oooohhh yum! So this morning, we all sat down for breakfast as a family: Isla with her Fiber 1, Cam with his toast and peanut butter, me with my oatmeal + yogurt (substitute for my missing banana) + peanut butter and Annie with her rice cereal (poor girl). However, she did pretty good. Of course there was the usual retraction after the beige paste hit her lips but after pondering it for a second, she went full force, assisting me with shoving that spoon right in her mouth! Atta girl! We will definitely give it another try tonight... but from here on in, this girl is eating food! YAY... she's getting so big so fast.

"Sure, I'll try it Mom".

"Umm, not to sure about this rice stuff".

"Hey... that's not so bad. Compared to formula, this stuff tastes like chocolate!" "Get in my belly!"

*satisfied*
